7 Tips for Success on Mt Blanc

Tips for success on Mont Blanc

  1. Start Training.
Get fit. Work out a realistic training  programme  focused on aerobic activity and stick to it. Include workouts that simulate your Mont Blanc ascent, such as walking uphill for several hours carrying a rucksack. Read More on Training for Mont Blanc.
  2. Prepare in good time.
Achieving any worthwhile goal requires passion, commitment and planning. Don’t leave it until last minute! Start your preparations at least 6 months in advance to give yourself time to train and organize logistics.
  3. Research the climb.
Find out all you can about Mont Blanc so there are no nasty surprises. Don’t forget preparation is both mental and physical.
  4. Choose your partner or guide well.
Climbing Mont Blanc is a great experience to share. A good team mate can make all the difference. Consider climbing Mont Blanc with an IFMGA mountain Guide, they are highly trained and be able to minimize the hazards and take care of the logistical details leaving you to focus on the climb.
  5. Get your equipment sorted.
Most technical equipment can be rented during your trip but choose your personal kit very carefully and practice using it. Blisters can ruin your trip so make sure you get out in the  footwear intended for the trip well in advance. Use the lightest kit you can afford. Wear clothes based on a layering system so you can adjust your temperature easily.
  6. Give yourself time to acclimatise.
At 4807 metres  the oxygen levels are low enough on Mont Blanc to give you Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Your body needs time to acclimatise to this altitude. We believe the minimum amount of time needed for this is a week so don’t rush your last minute preparations.
  7. Enjoy yourself !
Enjoy the training….enjoy the organization and most importantly enjoy the climb.   With careful preparation, a bit of luck and some decent weather there’s a good chance of making the summit. Remember though, if it all conspires against you Mont Blanc will always be there for another day ! Read what others have said
